The Rose City Classic Series of Dog Shows is one of the largest and most successful dog events in the United States. It spans 5 days (from Jan 18-22), starting with 20 specialty (single breed) shows and continuing with four days of all-breed dog shows, obedience (including Rally) and agility trials. Bring your dog and join in the Grand Opening Festivities which takes place during the Crawfish Festival! Free collapsible water bowls will be given away at the Grand Opening and Zelda, the world-famous bulldog, and her owner and creator, Carol Gardner will help celebrate opening the park. The off-leash dog park is a place just over half an acre in size where dogs can run and frolic with other dogs in a contained area and their human companions can socialize and enjoy the beautiful park at the same time. There are separate small dog and large/active dog areas, so all dogs can have a comfortable place to play. The Tualatin Dog Park Grand Opening is scheduled during the Crawfish Festival so if you're in the park already, make a point of coming to the pooch party! Crawfish Festival admission is not required to attend the Grand Opening. While the Grand Opening is on August 13, the dog park is currently open for your use, as of Friday, July 15th! [July 6, 2011] Bark for Life - BeavertonFor those of you that missed their Gresham event, Bark for Life will be having another event in Beaverton on June 18. This American Cancer Society Bark For Life is a noncompetitive walk event for dogs and their owners to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society's fight against cancer. There will be prizes, activities, music & food, demos/vendor booths and a silent auction. Pre-registration is $10/dog and on site registration is $20/dob and opens at 9:30am. Dashers have their choice of a run/walk over the Hawthorne and Steel bridges, or a relaxing loop down Naito Parkway and back along Waterfront Park. Each route is dog friendly and has great views of the city. The Arthritis Walk is the Arthritis Foundation's signature event that takes place in communities nationwide to raise funds and awareness to fight arthritis, one of the nation's leading causes of disability. It kicks off each May during National Arthritis Month. The event features both a three-mile and one-mile course, with activities for the entire family. Participants walk in honor of a friend or family member with arthritis, while those with arthritis wear blue hats to signify their action in taking control of their condition. [April 20, 2011] Give Blood and Save at the Oregon Humane SocietyThe OHS "Pints for Pups" blood drive offers a 30% adoption discount to every person who gives blood at OHS on Saturday, March 19. The Red Cross bloodmobile will be at OHS from noon to 5 pm. All adoption fees will be reduced by 30% for blood donors. To schedule your blood donation time at OHS, call the Red Cross at (503) 528-5608 or visit http://www.givelife.org . Adoption fees at OHS can be as low as $55 for dogs and $35 for cats. Instead, stop by the Oregon Humane Society (OHS) and get 50 percent off the adoption fee of any black or predominantly black adult pet on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday after Thanksgiving (Nov. 26-28). The annual OHS Black Friday sale begins at 10:00 am on Friday Nov. 26th and runs through Sunday, Nov. 28th. You'll find a huge selection of adult animals six months and older in all shapes and sizes. As of today, they have 27 dogs, 26 cats and two rabbits who qualify for the Black Friday 50% off adoption special. Every OHS adoption comes with a great list of "extras." Every dog owner should have a basic understanding of pet first aid and fortunately, Northwest Veterinary Specialists will be providing another FREE "First Aid for Your Best Friend" class at Urban Fauna on Nov 14 from 10am - 1pm. The class will include a CPR and bandaging demo/lab as well as an open forum for questions. They will discuss common emergencies including heat stroke, bloat, and brachycephalic airway syndrome as well as the 5 most frequent toxicities that they see in the ER. Categories will include most creative, funniest, best parent dog combo and most Portland-esque. Volunteers and attendees are encouraged to dress up as things that scare dogs (i.e. mail man, vacuum, etc.). A winner from each category will be chosen to receive a one-night stay at the hotel and gift basket from LexiDog Boutique. Appetizers and desserts from Red Star Tavern & Roast House will be provided, along with beer, wine and a signature cocktail for donation, of which all proceeds go to Guide Dogs for the Blind.
